FWIW, there's one Youtube review that had a closeup of the hookup for this advertised setup. (Can't remember which one). But I identified the trailer & specs

Bowlus trailers start at about $300,000 USD.

If that was a Mazda promo photo they're ok on weights but violating their own restriction on frontal area. Can't tell in the pic if that's a wdh.

Christian Schuster has a German Youtube channel, Schuster Automobile. He hasn't disappointed me yet with his CX-60 Phev videos. He's the guy that cut 0.65 seconds off 0 - 100kph (5.89 to 5.24 secs) sport mode vs off-road mode test runs. Also has a couple of great videos on the LED matrix adaptive headlights, one of which he totally disects the unit, revealing 38 leds per side. But this video he tows a car on a trailer (close to 2,500kg) 145 km at 11.32 L/100km (20.8mpg). If you don't speak German you'll need to turn on closed caption & in settings make auto translate= English. He talks fast so you may have to keep pausing video to keep up with text. (Conclusions at around 33min)

Footnote : CX-60 Phev is 525lb lighter that CX-90 Phev

You sound like your new to towing.
My current 2018 Highlander with WDH Hitch tows beautifuly my 19' Gulfstream TT. It weighs 3600 GVWT dry + 400 lbs gear max tanks are dry when I tow.

O issues ever and YES you need a WDH for sway control and Electric brakes to stop.

The CX 90 will have no issues and be much better for me with more torque and HP.
Wrong. I have been towing for 40 years with everything from VW bugs to my current Subaru Ascent. Even drove some semis back a ways. The only vehicles I ever used WDH were trucks with full frames.

If the CX-90 trailer mode has trailering stability mode, the use of auxiliary anti sway devices won't be advisable. the Ascent has anti sway built into its stability mode and the owner's manual specifically states not to use any ancillary anti sway devices or WDH. The exhortations against WDH goes on for pages.

I have towed rented trailers up to 4500 gross with 500# tongue verified on CAT scales and had no issues and no external devices other than my Tekonsha brake controller. The gas mileage plummets but no issues with handling.

It is my understanding that the towing mode on my PHEV won’t appear until I add the towing accessories. It also appears that towing mode will only appear with Mazda oem equipment installed. Is that bs? If I get a towing hitch and harness at uhaul and save hundreds, will I be unable to see towing mode?

I ordered my tow package and was told the tow mode will show up with aftermarket or factory Hitch once it's wired in. That's what my trusted dealer said.

I went the Mazda route for the hitch and wiring harness. The hitch is mechanical mount only. Bolts to the frame. Mazda provides excellent instructions. When they tell you to remove the tape from the threaded holes for the bolts to mount to the frame, keep in mind that the forward two (one on each side ) were camouflaged with under coating. The hitch itself will not activate the Tow Mode. I am quite sure it is the wiring harness that does that. The hitch was 500 at the dealer and the harness was 200. That hitch was massive and well powder coated. Fit was perfect. Two side flanges are mounted first and must be only mounted loosely so that the main, center part of the hitch can be slid in between the two side flanges and then everything can be tightened up. Easy two man job. No need to elevate vehicle on jack stands.
Wiring harness is a bit more involved as inside trim on driver’s side, door sill and the whole panel that is tucked under the third row seat has to come away from inside of vehicle. Then the wiring harness, control module, plugs and cabling all straight forward at rear driver’s side back corner. Then you have to put it all back together.
We got it done. Good install. Requires three fuses to be installed . So I’m guessing it’s the harness that activates the Tow Mode.
The harness won’t screw up the Mazda nerve system. An aftermarket hitch would be OK.
But I wouldn’t trust the harness to anything other than Mazda,…. At this point.

And any photos or guidance on how to pull the trim and panels would be appreciated

It’s a bummer that all CX-90s are not prewired for towing back to the tailgate. I am glad your install went well.
