read full thread, my initial wheel choice does not meet the required load ratings for the CX-90 PHEV

Hi guys,

I have a Canadian CX-90 GS-L PHEV, meaning 265/55R19 oem 3-seasons.

After much research / discussion, I'm going with a -1 setup for winter, using the oem GS MHEV's 255/60R18 size, as opposed to a 265/60R18 which would be a perfect diameter match with the oem GS-L's 265/55R19. Mazda uses staggered sizes, the original 18, 19 and 21 inch tires all have different diameters!

So the idea here with the smaller fitment is to provide a proper combo of wheel offset / tire placement in the fenders. We'll see how PMC Tire's advice pans out as they guarantee their fitment. Going with the oem 19" size would have increased my budget by about $800 CDN.

Wheel is the DTD Blizzard - same brand as my Crosstrek's replica wheels which have held well after one winter. Wheel is rated as a "direct oem fit", hubcentric and all. Cheap at $169 CDN each.

Tires are Toyo Observe GSi-06, same supplier as my oem 3-seasons, and tires that were fantastic last winter on a Ridgeline that I reviewed under a week where winter threw everything it had at us.

Kit shipped ready to bolt, will have to wait a bit for the programming due to how new the CX-90 is, but will test-fit front and rear as soon as it arrives.

Hi, this is a great thread. Can you guys please post pics of how flush your wheels sit once mounted? I am trying to determine if a 38 offset looks much different from a 45 on different options. I am pleasantly surprised by how flush the factory 21s are on my Signature model, and would like to avoid a tucked looked through the winter months. Thanks.

Sorry for that - I just remembered that on my new '22 Crosstrek the replica wheels have a 10 mm offset difference (1st gen offset on a 2nd gen car) and they fit more "flush" than the stock wheels - and it looks very good!

No longitudinal pic, but with a 3 mm offset difference it won't show much!

PMC arranged everything! The initial kit is going back tomorrow at no cost to me and the new kit is RWC MHK336 in 19"x8" with Toyo Observe GSi-6 in 255/60R19. The RWC MHK369 is b/o. The Braelin BR08 is still in stock but a lot more expensive. Wheels are rated at 2,035 lbs, above Mazda's spec, and the tires are rated at 113, above the oem 109. This time we should be good!

Okay, I just ordered this set through PMC's eBay store. I bought two and my wife bought two, so we could use the 25% code twice - we saved $650!
I called PMC. They told me to write: ASSEMBLY in the notes. I also asked them to programs the TPMS and add the centering rings. Will report back once they arrive.
NOTE: I went for the FC08 because the weight rating is very close to the 900kg recommended for the CX-90, and mine is the I6, not the PHEV, so it's lighter.

^^ Those wheels will look gorgeous on a white vehicle! I have a very similar garage floor, which reminds me that once my TR6 heads to winter storage, I will have to test-fit the CX-90 in the garage and decide if we add an indoor EVSE. With $600 from the province and $150 from the city, I think "yes" but I'll have to convice my wife! (edit: the Odyssey was fitting fine, but the proportions will make the CX-90 trickier to park in there)

Thank you for the kind words. Are you in Canada or in the US? We don't have such incentive, the only incentive we get is the izev incentive we get here in Ontario during vehicle purchase which is $2500. The CX-90 is a really tight fit in my garage, will need to do some re-organization this weekend to make it fit better.

You have to email them for the price adjustement and they will send you codes to build an ebay basket. But comparing my initial 10% rebate with the 25%, I only got about $120 back due to the cap-off at $400. The sale ends on the 24th but it proved so popular that they may have already pulled it. Best of luck!

Okay, my wheels and tires came today! They are true to size I think at 0.3" larger in diameter than the stock 21" tires. Lots of clearance around the suspension and they juuuust fit inside the wheel liner at full lock (and full suspension droop - I only test fit them while the car was jacked up). The combo is 57.2 lbs. The stock 21s are 81.2 lbs! It's insane that I'll be saving 24 lbs per corner for winter.

Thank you! I have the same decision for Canadian winter now too. I have been debating 19 vs 18 but like you said the price goes up dramatically.
Canadian Tire said that they would need to buy the pressure sensor kit from Mazda since there weren’t any known AEM kits for the 90. Curious to know how the kit you are getting works out.
Cheers for the info!

PCM Tire knows their stuff - the TPMS they installed and programmed never triggered the vehicle's dash light. Business as usual, nothing to see here. I highly recommend the second set that I bought and sourced from PCM. A bit of a hurdle to figure out all the rebates but they came through and honored their guaranteed fit by taking back the first set I had ordered.

I started this discussion, might as well close the loop! I installed my 255/60R19 Toyos the previous weekend and the wheels are indeed a perfect fit on top of having a load rating that exceeds Mazda's specs.

My surprise though was with the overall diameter of the tires. In theory, my alternate size would yield a half-inch bigger diameter. We all know that this is not an exact science and that YMMV with various tire models / brands. And my mileage did vary. I started with the driver's side, took a few steps back and noticed this:

This is off the jack. Suspensions sometimes "torque" a bit when you lift a car wheel by wheel, but that list was a bit much. So I placed a mounted tire next to the oem one still on the car on the right:

Learn about SUV All Weather tires - vs All Season tires

And more on Winter vs All Weather tires on this thread-

I found this tyre review site - lots of comparisons

UHP All Season tire test
Includes Falken Azenis FK460 A/S Treadwear 500 avail in 275/45-21 for CX-90
Summary at 13:13 Falken was in top 3, only a little behind on wet braking.
Note that my PHEV comes with OEM Falken Ziex CT60 A/S with treadwear 300 that is not available at Tirerack. Maybe it's too new.

Best Winter tires - In every Category 2023-24

Wide vs Narrow Winter tire sizes tested. How do they compare on Snow and Ice?
Turns out narrow vs wire tire doesn't make that much difference if the same tire (roughly) is used. Most important is to pick the best winter season tire for your use.
Then look at the available tire sizes that will work on your CX-90 and pick the wheel diameter that matches for the tire size. If you have a choice of 18" or 19" tire sizes the 18" will fit and usually cost less.
