Winter tires

Thanks very much for your post and information for those who need Winter wheel and tire options. Yes, there are some choices for wheels and smaller diameter does open up more selection and lower prices for both wheel and tire. Further, there can be less weight for the wheel and tire yet they function very well in winter conditions vs OEM sizes. The optional Blizzard wheel is 2" less in width which helps it cut through deep snow and lessens rolling resistance.

Some specs and options for DTD Blizzard wheels- comes in Black or Silver finish and multiple wheel offsets but not all will fit the CX-90
18x7.5" 5x114.3 bolt pattern, et42 with centerbore 67.1 (matches OEM centerbore, other offsets have centerbore which is smaller than 67.1 so they would need to be bored out)

Comparing the 18x7.5" et42 wheel with 255/60-18 tire to OEM-
The inner rim will be 28.4mm further from inner suspension, outer rim will poke out 22.4mm less, ride height will be 8.9mm less, speedo error is 2.3%, at true 60mph it will read 61.4.

Overall it looks good, let us know how you like it. Any idea how heavy the wheels are? Or even the weight of each wheel/tire combo?

For winter tires in 255/60-18 besides the Toyo Observe Gsi-06:

Light Truck/SUV Studless Ice and Snow tire
Bridgestone Blizzak DM-V2 $214 each

Yokohama Iceguard G075 $188 each

Performance Winter Snow tire
Vredestein Wintrac Pro $201 each

OK, thanks
Tires that are XL (extra load) load rated will handle more weight. The PHEV is extra heavy at 5200 lbs vs Turbo S at 4900 and Turbo at 4700, all are heavy. The XL load tires have a stiffer sidewall construction to handle that extra weight but can also be firm riding.

Guys, I will do a proper thread later on, but having received my mounted and balanced 18" winter kit this week, I just completed front and rear test-fits and it works !!
Great, please include all the wheel specs including load rating and offset, tire specs and overall weight of wheel/tire. Pictures would be good and your impressions when driving.

Whoa! Looks like I’m not going to find any set of wheels under 1000 CAD. Will have to resort to getting winter tires fitted onto the same rims. Not ideal, but I reallly don’t wanna end up spending over 1600 just for the wheels.
It's tough on a budget, just looking at tirerack.com for the CX-90 (any trim level)
Firestone WinterForce 2 UV SUV Studdable Winter Snow tire
265/60-18 $172 each, 110S load rated, fits rims 7.5-9.5" wide, perfect for 8" wide rim
Studding $15 per tire optional

Sample wheel for package to match tire
Sport Terrain TK13 gloss black painted finish $186 each
18x8" et35, 25.75 lbs each

These are decent and will function for winter. An option.

Great thread folks. Just bought a CX90 GT-P. Looking at winter tires on PMC. Looks like one way to go is the RWC MHK336 in 19"x8" with Toyo Observe GSi-6 in 255/60R19.

Curious why the 19in and not 20 or 21 (aside from price considerations of course)?
Some info on the Toyo Observe Gsi-6 Studless Performance Winter Tire However I do not see this tire in 255/60-19 from Toyo.
Looks like a good choice for the CX-90
For an 18" rim 265/60-18 and for 19" rim 255/55-19.

Looks great, thanks for the pictures. Pretty sharp for Winter setup.

For the CX-90 a little bit taller than OEM tire diam is fine and closes the gap a little. Just don't get too tall or under load/on uneven surfaces the clearance may not be quite enough.

Great fitment overall. Good choices. (y)

Learn about SUV All Weather tires - vs All Season tires

And more on Winter vs All Weather tires on this thread-

I found this tyre review site - lots of comparisons

UHP All Season tire test
Includes Falken Azenis FK460 A/S Treadwear 500 avail in 275/45-21 for CX-90
Summary at 13:13 Falken was in top 3, only a little behind on wet braking.
Note that my PHEV comes with OEM Falken Ziex CT60 A/S with treadwear 300 that is not available at Tirerack. Maybe it's too new.

Best Winter tires - In every Category 2023-24

Wide vs Narrow Winter tire sizes tested. How do they compare on Snow and Ice?
Turns out narrow vs wire tire doesn't make that much difference if the same tire (roughly) is used. Most important is to pick the best winter season tire for your use.
Then look at the available tire sizes that will work on your CX-90 and pick the wheel diameter that matches for the tire size. If you have a choice of 18" or 19" tire sizes the 18" will fit and usually cost less.

With the larger diameter tires, actual mileage and speed will be different than indicated mileage and speed, no?
Yes, there can be small differences when using tire sizes that are different tire diameters.

Comparing OEM 275/45-21 to 255/60-19 tire diam. is about 8mm taller, speedo error is about -0.98%, speedo reading at 30 mph is 29.7 mph, reading at 60 mph is about 59.4 mph, ride height gain about 4mm. It's close enough.

KDCX9&90,

Thanks for your selections and pictures. Bridgestone Blizzak DM-V2 (light Truck/SUV Studless Ice and Snow tire) is a great choice for winters with ice and snow.

255/55-19 fits rims 7-9" wide, perfect for 8" wide rim, 111 XL load rated, 33 lbs. tire diam. 30"
265/50-19 fits rims 7.5-9.5" wide, perfect for 8.5" wide rim, 110 XL load rated, 36 lbs. tire diam. 29.5"
275/55-19 fits rims 7.5-9.5" wide, perfect for 8.5" wide rim, 111 XL load rated, 40 lbs. tire diam. 30.9"

265/50-20 fits rims 7.5-9.5" wide, perfect for 8.5" wide rim, 107 SL load rated, 37 lbs. tire diam. 30.5"
275/45-20 fits rims 8.5-10.5" wide, perfect for 9" wide rim, 110 XL load rated, 38 lbs. tire diam. 29.8"
275/50-20 fits rims 7.5-9.5" wide, perfect for 8.5" wide rim, 113 XL load rated, 40 lbs.tire diam. 30.9"

21" sizes not available

I was wondering if anyone knew the load rating of Mazda cx-5 oem 19 x7 in rims? considering using those as my wheels for 255/60 r19 blizzaks but can’t find info on load rating.
For example 2023 Mazda CX-5 AWD OEM tire is listed as Toyo A36 Crossover/SUV All Season tire 225/55-19 300 treadwear 99V load rated, tire diam. 28.8", fits rims 6-8" wide, perfect for 7" wide rims
Just doing a search for wheels that fit there are no options for 19x7" at Tirerack. The narrowest wheel available aftermarket is 19x7.5" and load ratings for wheels are built for the vehicles they are meant to fit. So for an SUV as heavy (4700-5200 lbs) as an CX-90 the OEM CX-5 wheels are too light weight and don't have the load rating to work. If you remove the wheel you will see the load rating stamped into the metal inner spokes in kg.

Bridgestone Blizzak DM-V2
For 255/60-19 you need a rim that is 7-9" wide, perfect for 7.5" wide, 108 SL load rating, tire diam. 31.1" (a little tall vs OEM). In theory the 19x7" wheel will work with this tire size.
Alternate tire sizes for 19x7" rims would be-
235/65-19 Perfect fit for 7" wide rim, tire diam. 31.1"
245/55-19 Fits rims 7-9" wide, perfect for 8" wide rim, tire diam. 29.7"
255/55-19 Fits rims 7-9" wide, perfect for 8" wide rim, tire diam. 30"

Searching for winter wheels for the CX-90 the most narrow rim offered by Tirerack is 19x8" or 18x8". No 7" wheels are listed so I don't think that is going to work.

Sorry my Tirerack search for that Continental tire did not show any in that size, is it new? Check production date if it is old stock. 4 digit code on side of each tire.

In 265/55-19 the winter tire selection is indeed sparse.

I could only find Pirelli Scorpion Winter , Dedicated Light Truck/SUV Performance Winter Snow tire
$347 each, $80 instant rebate right now.

I just put on a set of Vredestein Wintrac Pros in Tire Rack's recommended -1 wheel sizing, 265/60R-18.
Have only done a really short test drive, but they felt pretty good on dry roads. Hoping they're good tires, it's a new brand for me.
Great choice. Should work well.
Vredestein Wintrac Pro (Performance Winter/Snow tire)
265/60-18 $198 each, fits wheels 7.5-9.5" wide, perfect for 8" wide rim, 114 XL load rated, 31 lbs., Tire diam. 30.5"

OK, but does that mean you rejected the 2018 tires? And that is why you are still using OEM tires? 2018 is quite old and have been sitting for a long time. Rubber gets hard over time and dry rot with cracking can occur. Old tires could be used but they won't be as good as when new. Rubber is soft when new and ages with UV light and time so that the rubber gets harder which means the noise can be more, wear is usually slower but traction and ride compliance is reduced.

Sounds like you need more grip for winter weather use for your area. Normally Falken Azenic FK460 A/S would be OK for light snow and mild winters. You don't have enough grip from your description.

For those that have the PHEV- (OEM tire sizes for winter use)
Note the winter tires have no treadwear rating and are better suited for snow use.

OK, glad you were able to find Continental VikingContact 7 in 265/55-19. It's a Studless Ice and Snow tire.
Tire rack doesn't list them in stock for that size but I do find it available from other retail sources.
