I don’t know. I really was looking forward to this vehicle - for what seems like 2 years. The engine is going to be spectacular, I believe. But man, what a swing and a miss with the exterior design. The back looks so big and bloated. It may drive great, but it looks like a whale. Not light, agile or athletic like the CX-9. Was talking to a co-worker today who was also anxiously awaiting this launch. We both have 2016 CX-9s and love them, and wanted to replace them with the CX-90. But I don’t think so now. It’s a real shame.Really digging how it looks in white. I am glad that Mazda kept the lower black plastic trim to a minimum. Now for a Mazda it seems more upscale than it really is!
Welcome to the forum. That's what I thought when looking at the rear but it might look better in person. Have you decided what spec and color to get it in?I don’t know. I sure hope it looks better in person. If it doesn’t, I know 2 CX-9 owners that will not be upgrading. I’ve only seen the 2 colors (white and red), and while I think the red is a beautiful color, it seems to be accentuating the heft of the back end. Of these two colors I’d probably go white, which is what our current 2016 Signature is. If I were to upgrade (which I now highly doubt I would), I would want something equivalent to my current Signature trim.Welcome to the forum. The red stands out to me more than white but I agree that it looks great with minimum black plastic. If it looked more like the CX-50 I'd be a bit disappointed since the CX-90 is supposed to be a higher trim.Really digging how it looks in white. Welcome to the forum @DharmaDog! If the CX-90 doesn't impress you when you see it in person, would you consider something like the CX-50 or CX-70? Or do you need the space that your CX-9 has?I sure hope it looks better in person. If it doesn’t, I know 2 CX-9 owners that will not be upgrading. I can’t believe Mazda spent the time and money on this pre-launch series of videos where they were so focused on the importance of design, only to end up with this. Ugh! I’m so disappointed!
They take away the Mazda6 in the US, come out with the ridiculous MX-30, still no car that looks like the RX-Vision, and now this CX-90. Mazda, what are you doing?
At least they said the Miata will always be around.

I have a feeling the CX-90 will look better in person than these photos/videos show. That's usually the case with most vehicles from my own experience. Even still I still think it's one of the better looking SUVs you can get. Hopefully it will win you over. Do all the people you recommended the CX-90 to not like it?I’ll take a look at the CX-70 when it comes out, but was wanting the extra room of the CX-90. Maybe the CX-70 won’t look so portly in the rear since it doesn’t have to accommodate the 3-across 3rd row. The CX-50 is too Subaru-ish.
Man, I’m really bummed about the CX-90. I love Mazda. In addition to the CX-9, we also have a ND MX-5 that I track, and a Mazda6. And I used to also have a Mazda3 hatchback.
I know a number of people that are looking to buy crossovers, and I’ve been telling them to wait for the CX-90 before buying. And they have, and now I look like an idiot. These aren’t ‘car’ people. They buy on looks, features and price. Cars are merely appliances to them, so looks are frequently more important than driving dynamics. They don’t get how cool an I6 engine is. And they’ll never know because the look of the CX-90 turns them off.
The current CX-9 set a high bar for looks, premium finish, driving dynamics, and price. It was only after this car hit the market that we saw other manufacturers up their games on their larger crossovers, particularly on premium finishes. So I get that there is less differentiation between the CX-9 and say the Palisade or Telluride in regards to features or finishes. But Mazda could still differentiate on driving dynamics - my CX-9 does not drive like a crossover, it drives more like a sporty sedan. But the looks had to (and did) bring potential buyers to the dealerships. Mazda can’t count on that now.
I don’t think the 8th seat was worth this damage to the design. 7 seats are fine for most people. We bought our CX-9 well aware that there were 8 seaters on the market. It never factored into the equation. As a matter of fact, our vehicle before the CX-9 was an 8 seater. And while magazines routinely point out that the CX-9 is small compared to the competition, it isn’t a small car, and has been plenty big enough 99% of the time to accommodate my 3 kids and 2 dogs. Admittedly, I was happy to hear that the CX-90 would be bigger, but I assumed that still meant 7 seats but with a bit more hip/shoulder room - not a huge rear end.
I hope Mazda didn’t think the 8th seat would be a big selling point, and didn’t add it in a ‘me too’ fashion because a lot of competitors have 8 seats. Mazda needs to be Mazda. That’s what I want. That’s what others want. Mazda should not follow Hyundai, KIA, Toyota, Subaru, Honda, Nissan, Ford or GM. Those companies offer plenty of options that largely look and drive the same. Be Mazda, put driving and design before carrying capacity and cookie cutter looks.
I think the problem is that no one has told me they love it, or that yes, this was worth waiting for. However, several have said that they are not interested due to the exterior styling, specifically the rear end. Other than the rear end in general, several have called out the thick D pillar, specifically.I have a feeling the CX-90 will look better in person than these photos/videos show. Side note, Is your ND MX-5 stock or is it modified? How long have you had it?
Unfortunately, the rear end is disappointing for me as well. The D-pillars appear to be copied from a ten year old Kia Sorento, and the taillight bulge from a CR-V of the same era (think Broderick's Super Bowl ad). That's fair, It'll be interesting to see if their view s change when it arrives at dealers. Sounds like you've built a nice little track weapon! Where do you normally track it.I think the problem is that no one has told me they love it, or that yes, this was worth waiting for. My ND is really only a track toy at this point. It has racing seats with halos that make it difficult to see around corners on the street. And it has a race exhaust and race brakes, so it’s loud. And very stiff suspension, so not comfortable. There are many other mods. It is a riot on the track. I‘ve had it since Feb 2017, and began tracking it that year.
A dark green would suit the CX-90 pretty well I think. Something like the Cardiff Green Genesis uses would be cool.I think it looks pretty spectacular and although I love looking at that Artisan Red I hope they will offer equally stunning paint choices in a not too dark blue or green. If you watch most of the reviewers from the launch event they are impressed as well and I didn't hear any of them say it was hideous. But to each his own. That's why supermarket shelves are stocked with umpteen varieties of salad dressing, for example. Not everybody likes the same kind.
That looks more like a blue… I once had a car (a Rover 214 in Europe) that depending on the type of light, it was green or blue… one of the best colours!A dark green would suit the CX-90 pretty well I think. Something like the Cardiff Green Genesis uses would be cool.
