Hello - I have a CX90 PHEV premium with approx 800 miles on it that presented an interesting issue a week ago. I noticed an odd burning smell inside the cabin when driving that both my wife and son commented on as well. The best explanation I can give to describe the smell is like burning electronics which could be a wire shorting or even the battery pack (a big mystery at this point). When I got home, I tried to pinpoint where it was coming from and noticed it’s strongest in the back and you can notice it more when you stick your nose up to the vents (not AC vents) on the very back pillars that mate with the lift gate. I also noted that when I plugged the car in to charge, the radiator ran more aggressively than previously. It’s as if the car was working harder to keep the battery cool. Normally the CX90 is relatively quiet while charging but it was now humming … it was that way all night. I took it to dealer the next day and they’ve had the car for a week. Their immediate reaction when I pulled up and popped the lift gate was “whoa I smell it.” I’ve been nagging them daily for updates and telling them to get Mazda engineers out there as the car is too new for all the service techs. I’ve read that on the transmission issues the I-6 models have been having they did something similar and brought an entire crew from Japan. Have any other PHEV owners had similar issues? As a word of awareness, I’ve also noted from driving my car and the demo they gave me that the regen breaks do also smell and you’ll notice a burning stench when pulling into garage. However, that smell doesn’t enter the cabin the issue in my car is different. The only thing the dealer has told me is they agree the smell is there, they can’t figure it out at this point and it’s being escalated within the ranks of Mazda.
