Initial owner notes

Notes from Day 1:
-Spec Deck states rear console is illuminated, and says nothing about the front console, rear is not illuminated, but the front is. Wish it was, may have to come up with something.
-Rear traffic alerts on HUD are really wide (in lower corners), didn't notice them at first, plus they are white (wish they were colored). HUD space is really big, nice.
-Front camera in drive stays on longer than expected, allowing slow speed navigation down our steep driveway with rock wall on one side and a bit of a drop off on the other. Great visability for close tight manuveuring where the hood is in the way.
-Instrument gauges allow 2 numeral text sizes.
-Keyless entry defaults to only unlock driver's door, but can be changed in settings to unlock all doors with a single grab of the handle. Door unlock button on inside of drivers door is not in a great location, in front of door opening lever.
-Auto Headlights stay at low beam until about 20mph, then highs come on. Likewise when slowing down they revert to low beams around 10-12 mph. Response to oncoming traffic is very good. Great illumination overall, although on our twisty hilly county road the top of low beam sawtooth pattern is noticeable, not sure if its an issue on flat highway, yet.
-Driver positioning system is hit or miss, but is tweakable and saves all your preferences; mirrors, audio favorites, digital vs analog clock, etc, and upon re-entry recognizes the driver. After turning car off the seat slides back & tilt steering wheel raises up (if not already maxed out), but unfortunately seat does not lower to make exit/re-entry easier for 'less tall' people.
-Ambient lighting is dimmable, includes foot wells, door upper, door armrests, lower door storages, moonlight over front center shifter console area. Puddle lights upon door opening (all 4 doors), projects from under door bottom.
-Wireless charger works on my Samsung Note with Otterbox cover, but phone get pretty warm.

Get something like this, you can thank me later.

I originally thought maybe the rear bumper should have been extended out, but now I get it, Kodo - 'soul of motion' & animal awaiting to pounce. Now think it should have been tucked in a little more, lol.

While our new CX-90 did not come wrapped in a giant red bow, it did come with this hammered metal tray (happens to fit in the front console storage compartment), YMMV.

That's weird! Where in the car was it when you found it?
These were given out to dealership staff that attended the immersion ride & drive events. Our salesman gifted to us his personal one, afaik.

Ahh, that makes sense... Man these cars rock. For a 5k lb suv its fast

Probably won't have to worry about vibrating hood at any speed.

I think the engineer who designed the hood opening was a dentist in a previous life, "open wide!". Need to drop hood from 12"-15" to ensure all latches catch. I tried laying down and pushing front center only to discover the next morning the passenger side front corner was up.

OP, completely agree with your first post. I’d like to add that the wireless charger just doesn’t work. We took it back to the dealership yesterday to diagnose. Yes, it works for five minutes sitting at the shop but not on the drive home. We took a two hour trip and my iPhone didn’t gain any more charge despite getting very warm, hot actually. Yesterday, my wife’s Samsung charged 1-2% in 25 minutes then started cycling white/green on the charger status. My iPhone went 15 minutes, didn’t charge and started flashing red. They both heated up in that time.

The adaptive speed control works very well except for recognizing semis. Even with a semi well into their own interstate lanes I’ve had seven experiences in two drives where the vehicle hit the brakes to avoid a collision with nothing in my lane.

Engine is and has plenty of power (Turbo S) but the transmission stutters occasionally in low speed. This happens most often from a full stop.

The driver recognition system usually sets all my settings correctly but has stopped midway once it twice. The bigger failure is to recognize our faces, which happens ~30%. Failure increases in low light but can still happen on a bright, sunny day. When it fails to detect it then moves off the selection screen to quickly a quarter of the time. I have to go back into settings to select my profile.

The rear windshield washer is weird. Why they designed it to dribble down the center is beyond my understanding.

Interior ambient lighting is great. I wish there was a locking interior compartment.

Thanks for sharing your experiences. These are just the kind of things soon-to-be owners would never know without owners posting.

Disappointing to hear about the wireless charging pad as that would be really handy with the wireless carplay/AA. Same with the windshield washer in the back.

I wonder if the transmission is a programming issue Mazda can fix with a software update or if it's just inherent to the car.

There are always nits to pick but hopefully Mazda can deal with the washer redesign as a mid cycle refresh and maybe the wireless charger as a TSB or replacement part.

And if these are the worst issues we see as owners then things are pretty good.

I think it is the design of the transmission and not an issue per se. But 8/10 people will identify it as an issue. Hoping there is software to fix it, but I am not holding my breadth.

Agree except for the occasional stutter from a full stop. That needs resolution.

Thank you for sharing your notes. Does the transmission stutter if you turn off the auto engine stop?

That’s an excellent question and I’ve wondered if it was the cause. I have not tested that thought yet.
I haven't really noticed a stutter from full stop yet (with easy, in traffic, thottle). But I have noticed upon coasting/deceleration with engine off, you can feel/hear (slightly) tranny downshifting and if you hit the gas at a transition point it may do a quick upshift.

I’ve only had one weird shift hunting while in motion.

I've noticed some jerkiness with the tranny. Almost like someone trying to learn a manual. I think it is because it shifts as soon as it can. Mine is doing it less with 1k miles now. I stop off or on doesn't matter. I noticed it less in sport mode when it holds the gear longer.

Yeah, gear shift out of 1st happens pretty quick. I noticed the low 1st gear ratio is 5.258, probably to give some mechanical leverage for the small electric motor to get 4,900lbs rolling. Table shows each gear ratio from 1st- 8th, Reverse, Final drive. (Phev on right)

I will echo the thought that I believe 1st gear having something to do with the twitchy-ness down low; its a combination of holding 2nd vs. downshifting to 1st, iStop, and the regenerative braking system. The regenerative braking system is pretty strong, and so going from braking to gas pedal has a couple operations occurring, and if the iStop kicks in on top of this you potentially have a engine start + clutch grab added to the mix.

I think I have started to adapt how I drive in terms of pedal usage around how I believe the system likes to operate with pretty good success, but slow speed turns where I normally am coasting through the turn (either slight braking or just true coasting) seem to be worse when coming from light braking then just straight coasting back into throttle input.

I believe Mazda needs to look at conditions for getting into 1st. Honestly, there should be plenty of times where it isn't even needed, on flat or pitched down surfaces starting from 2nd is much smoother. Moving from a stop in pitched up surfaces will benefit from using 1st. But I am sure there is also something that needs looked at in the iStop system and the clutch pack engagement control system itself. I dont see a reason to ever downshift into 1st until the vehicle comes to a complete stop. Id say 90% of the issues are occurring at slow speeds, during periods of non-aggressive decel->accel inputs < 10 mph (maybe even better to put it around 5-7mph) with turning involved. So parking lot navigation / neighborhood stuff.
