I purchased my CX-90 just over a week ago and have about 300 miles on it. Thi sweekend I got a "Critical Vehicle Malfunction"
error and the car would not drive, it locked into park after I pulled over. I also get these error messages: "Charging system Malfunction" and "i-Activsense partially disabled."
.

The dealer is looking at this today but nothing back yet, will let you know. JMc

I just bought cx90 just a week ago. Never had problems until today. First popped up is i-stop malfunction, then hybrid malfunction and the car wouldnt want to drive. The ac works but its not blowing air. Never did I turn On the car on accessory mode only and driving wise is A to B only. Please help if you guys experienced this kind of issue or know more knowledge about cars. I know common sense is have the dealer checked but atleast I want to know before hand.
Recently happened to me, it all started when my battery died. Thinking back I pushed the key lock but didn’t hear the horn as to tell the doors are locked payed it no kind looked at the app and the readings was everything is closed and locked according to the app WRONG! The next morning I learned the doors was not locked and from the look of things the battery was dead. Called roadside service got a jump started up than the Hybrid and I-Stop malfunction indicators came call the dealer they say “drop it off when you get the chance” being that I couldn’t miss a day of work I parked the not wanting to take a chance driving it and a few hours later everything went back to normal. Have not drove it in about a week because of work but in hindsight I might of didn’t turn it off completely as I think the reason why the key lock didn’t make the horn beeping sound as to alert the car is locked.? So I’ll reenact the whole theory to make sure it was a glitch from the battery dying BUT I WILL NOT LET the battery die or leave the car on.

Similar to my issue: I had a really scary and disappointing experience with the car's over all performance and experience a full month in driving it. 1. The car iStop / hybrid stopped working and the only way to make the iStop hybrid restore to work is to turn the A/C completely off. It's gets too hot in the car and when the A/C is on, the hybrid feature gas saving capability will never work again. 2. The lag of the engine Vs turbo is horrible. Had 2 close calls that I need the cars power to accelerate and was almost hit by another on coming car (left and right turns) I've been driving since 16 years of age. I'm 44 now. You'd know my experience. 3. As you know we have a new born and the car twice stalled on us on the road. The engine stalled, stopped and will not engage in gear. I had to pull to the side on the highway and tune hazards on. Had to turn the car off and on to have it work again. This happened twice 4. After all this the engine light is now on and stating that there's an "engine malfunction." We have doctors appointments for baby and Andrea's surgery in the coming weeks and it's significantly important we have a working car. Twice the car stalled while my wife and daughter are passengers. It's not safe. If it's just me, it's ok. The car came completely choked while driving at 80kms/ hr on the highway and started to slow down and won't engage in gear to accelerate. I cause traffics. Twice! Otherwise we love the new car but safety is key for us and reliability. I'm almost disappointed

We have the same issue on our PHEV, bought it 2 weeks ago. It has the hybrid engine malfunction and has the engine yellow warning light on. It stalled us while on the freeway, so this is definitely concerning. We tried starting the engine on and off twice until we got it back up. We were on EV mode when it happened. We continued our drive on the freeway using Normal mode to get us to our destination. We will bring it to the dealer where we got it from. Keep us posted on this issue.

This is just alarming! We also just purchased this car about two months ago and its CURRENTLY in the shop right now for recalls. But as we leave the dealership we get this "malfunction and engine check" light again. Now that's the second time!!! I happened to us about a few weeks back and again today leaving the dealership after they just needed it for "recalls". NO WAY this expensive and brand new car can already give so much trouble. We will not wait to believe the "we fixed it" crap. We've put a claim with Mazda directly already to get a case going! We will not take our chances.

any update from Mazda on this? Are you filing any case? What happened to us was similar and really life threatening.

We also bought Mazda CX90 PHEV month back in NC and drove 700+ miles in the city. We drove to Atlanta for a weekend and it took us to Atlanta without issues. In Atlanta while driving to downtown it stopped us in the middle giving error as hybrid malfunction. We tried multiple times it was giving the same error. So we have to tow the vehicle to nearest Mazda showroom. We have to rent a loner vehicle and went back to NC. Hope they find the issue and permanently fix the problem! Our vacation was spoiled and kids where soo upset.

Just picked up our PHEV on Friday and today, all these warnings came on while parked: In-vehicle communication network malfunction, hybrid system malfunction, i-activesense system malfunction, engine malfunction, dynamic stability control malfunction, air bag system and seat belt pre-tensioner system malfunction. Car still drives and kept it in normal mode, but going to take it back to the dealer tomorrow.

Anyone who's brought this to the dealer have a definitive answer on what they fixed?

I purchased the car 7 days ago, and have the same issue. The errors I've received are:
  • "Charging System Malfunction. Unable to Charge. Have the Vehicle Inspected."

  • "Hybrid System Malfunction. Stop the Vehicle in a Safe Location"

  • "high voltage battery is depleted. Vehicle Cannot Be Driven Until Battery is Charged"

So I can't use the car until it is charged, but I can't charge because of some issue. I believe the car was on overnight and it got into an inconsistent state and drained the battery even though it was plugged in overnight. I couldn't remove the charger until I unplugged it from the wall. Then it went from saying 100% charge to 0%.

I forgot to add that Mazda roadside service was unable to jump start the car, and unable to put the car in neutral. I told them this but they brought a tow truck that couldn't pull in my driveway to load up the wheels. So it's stuck in my driveway, unable to get to the dealer.

Well, it's my first post on and here I am to join the bandwagon ... with the similar warning lights within less than 24 hours drove off from the dealership. Very unhappy, I know it's the first year of the new model, but looks like we're on the pace to have a class-action lawsuit soon... I wonder if any of you had "Hybrid System Electrical Leakage Detected" warning, this one concerns me ...

Purchased on Sunday, malfunction on Monday, still waiting to hear back from the dealership.

YIKES! We just picked one up yesterday and now I am seriously concerned.
We have a newborn also.

Fingercross, I hope you have a better luck. It was not fun when the car malfunction while have a baby and a toddler in the car with me to waiting for the two truck...

Make sure you have at least a backup towing service. I used the Mazda service first, but the app can't even find my VIN number. Luckily I had tow coverage under my insurance as well.

i bought a CX 90 PHEV july 2023 , i experienced a hybrid malfunction message on aug 22 2023 . the car started to hesitate a bit while driving i did not know what was going to happen . i will take it to the dealer . my battery was on empty but that should not matter . please advise if any info

Hi all. Potential buyer here.

I am curious if maybe there is a correlation between this issue and vehicle location? And more specifically outside temps.

With it launching in the summer, EVs can drain in high heat (I believe.. correct me if wrong). Would be great if we could get a poll going or something to collect some data.

I’m in TX and before this issue starting popping up I was already starting to wonder how the PHEV will handle 110 degree days in direct sun.

Admittedly I haven’t done a ton of research yet on this topic but I’m curious if anyone else has or has experience with other cars in high heat, etc.

Anyone know where they had their drive charge target set when the error occurred? A few folks mentioned it happening with a drained battery, so I'm curious if maybe the system was trying to regenerate too much (or too little) energy from the icu.

I'm in the pacific northwest, so nothing crazy. On that night when all the warning lights came on while parked, it was probably 72 to 77 degrees.

Main battery had 30% left and charge target when plugged in was at 100%.

Same as my situation, temperature was around 70 degrees, battery was 100% charged.

Just talked to the dealership, since it's such a new technology for Mazda, they have to reach out to Mazda HQ, HQ think it's a problem related to the 12V battery, not the hybrid system. So they've advised dealership to drain and recharge all the batteries. Tomorrow morning we'll get an answer to see if that solves the issues.

I can foresee there'll be so many time spent at the service department if the hybrid system ever has issues. Oh well ...

Update:
Was told by the service department that they have completed the procedure and all warning messages has gone and the car is ready to be picked up around 3pm, I arrived at 6pm just about to drive off from the dealership lot, "Hybrid System Malfunction" warning has came up again. So the car is back to the shop... To be continued...
